Oracle
Oracle is a relational database management system developed by Oracle Corporation.
The Oracle RDBMS is used in many database applications on sevarl OS platforms, including Unix and Windows. Oracle database was initially developed by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner and Ed Oates. Their company Software Development Laboratories was founded in 1977 (renamed to Relational Software, Inc. in 1979). In 1983 the company was renamed to Oracle Corporation.
Oracle database was the first database complying with the ANSI SQL standard.
The lates version of Oracle database – Oracle 10g runs on the following platforms - Linux x86, Linux Itanium, Microsoft Windows (32-bit and 64-bit), Solaris x86, Solaris SPARC (64-bit), AIX5L, HP-UX, PA-RISC, HP-UX Itanium, HP Tru64 UNIX, IBM z/OS, Mac OS X Server.
The Oracle database was the first commercial RDBMS that became available on Linux during the summer of1999.
The Oracle datatabase is more expensive compared to MS SQL Server.
PL/SQL short for Procedural Language/Structured Query Language is Oracle's server-based extension to the SQL language.
